3 Steps to a Cozy Fall Home

It’s officially fall and that means getting comfy and cozy indoors, especially if you live in a part of the country with all four seasons. We’re all accustomed to adding a few more candles and throw pillows to our spaces, but if you want to step up your fall decor game, we’ve got the perfect recipe. Even if you don’t experience fall temps, these three things will make your home feel like you’re ready to hibernate.

Tones

Let’s start with the easiest - Tones. Self-professed leaf peeper here, and we all know fall is synonymous with changing foliage - reds, yellows, oranges and browns. Using these colors (and their variations) is the easiest way to bring fall into your home. If you’re looking for moodier vibes, combine these with dark grays and blacks (even purples!) from marble or stone pieces, or darker plaid patterns.

Look for:

  • Earthy tones - reds, yellows, oranges, browns, ambers, coppers

  • Moody tones - dark grays, blacks, purples

  • Patterns - plaid, moody florals, houndstooth

Add in:

  • Brass accents - candle holders with textured tapers, unique catchalls or dishes, birds/owls

  • Stone pieces - Onyx vases, marble catchalls or bookends, alabaster busts

  • Glass accents - crystal dishes or vases, amber glass votives, green/dark glass vessels

Dried Florals

If you’re not a fan of faux florals, dry hydrangea blooms and add them to your favorite vase or bowl to add texture

Textures

This one is my personal favorite - Textures. This one can often be overlooked but really helps to create the most visual interest in any space. Textures give the eye a place to rest and can break up similar shapes, avoiding a cluttered appearance, which can be much needed with the current maximalist decor trend.

Look for:

  • Textiles - soft fabrics for snuggling

  • Organic materials - faux or dried florals, seasonal fillers, garlands

  • Woven elements - help evoke the outdoors

Add in:

  • Pillow covers in velvet or boucle; faux fur or plaid throw blankets

  • Seasonal fillers like acorns, pine cones, pumpkins, apples; garlands and faux florals

  • Baskets, woven lamp shades, unique wicker or woven wood furniture pieces

Fall Vignettes

Brass leaves, an orange art book and a glass vase with dried florals is the perfection combination of tones, textures and layers

Layers

Once you have all of your favorite items gathered, it’s time for the final step - combine your tone and texture pieces for the ultimate layered home.

Add in your brass candle holders with red tapers and your favorite throw blanket. Put a stack of TBR books in an unexpected place. Set your dining table with vintage plates and wine glasses and have your next meal there just because. Light your candles and fireplace, turn on your favorite lamp o’clock lamps, and settle into your cozy home.

Epilogue

Oh, one more thing - an important one for me - Make sure you really love everything you surround yourself with and aim to be intentional with the items you bring into your home. Quality decor pieces aren’t hard to find but may require a bit more investment because they are made to last and come with a history. 💙
